「新自由主義」這個詞，不知道的人不知道，知道的人也很不好意思說出口，就跟資本主義一樣，再怎麼批判都好像打不死。自八〇年代，新自由主義藉由雷根及柴契爾政府的全方位政策深入人心，傳統的右派或左派標籤已失去意義，民主和極權之間的界線也被抹糊了。站在人民對面的既得利益者，他們是收編國家權力為己用的「建制派」（establishment；港譯），不僅掌控制度，掌握基礎建設，也掌控訂定公共討論角度及視野的關鍵權力（framing）。
